Augmentation Mastoplasty - Breast augmentation

WHAT IS AN AUGMENTATION MASTOPLASTY?

An augmentation mastoplasty is the most frequently requested aesthetic surgery procedure. The reason is because this type of procedure allows many women, especially young ones, to overcome the complex of having small or asymmetrical breasts, improving the harmony of their figure and, at the same time, rediscovering their self-esteem.

WHO IS THIS PROCEDURE FOR?

Augmentation mastoplasty is especially suited for women with small breasts who wish to increase the volume; women with sagging breasts who, due to natural body type or drastic weight loss, pregnancy or breastfeeding, want to lift and make their breasts fuller; women with asymmetrical breasts or any other malformation, for which the anomaly can be a source of embarrassment.

Patients must be 18 years of age or older to undergo breast augmentation surgery, unless the operation is requested to remedy a congenital malformation (for example, tuberous breasts) or an acquired malformation.

WHAT DOES THE PRE-OPERATIVE VISIT ENTAIL?

The pre-operative visit is very important because it allows the surgeon to understand the patient’s wishes and expectations and to help her plan the aesthetic results that can be attained.

During this meeting, the professor explains the most modern surgical techniques used in augmentation mastoplasty and can suggest the most appropriate type of implants to be used in order to achieve the desired result.

All the implants used by Prof. Mario Dini are modern silicone implants produced by the finest pharmaceutical companies (Allergan, Mentor and Silimed); these implants are guaranteed for the entire lifespan of the patient and have a low percentage of complications.

Nowadays, it is no longer necessary to replace the implants after 10 years, unless the patient wishes to change the shape and/or volume of her breasts or when there are rare complications like capsular contracture, which is when the body rejects the implant.

Breast implants can be anatomically shaped (“teardrop”) or rounded (more conventional implant) with a volume that varies from a minimum of 100 cc to over 700 cc.

HOW IS THE AUGMENTATION MASTOPLASTY PROCEDURE DONE?

Augmentation mastoplasty is a procedure that lasts on average 30-60 minutes and is performed under local anaesthesia with sedation (meaning the patient is awake but feels no pain) or under general anaesthesia, as an outpatient procedure or, rarely, with a one- or two-night stay at the clinic.

Technically, the augmentation mastoplasty operation is done by inserting the implants through small incisions around the areola or in the submammary fold or in the underarm region. The implants can be positioned under the large pectoral muscle or under the mammary gland or in between (technically called the “dual plane”). The tiny incisions will be nearly invisible to the naked eye.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT IN POST-OPERATIVE RECOVERY?

At the end of the procedure, the patient is asked to wear a compression bra and to be on bed rest for at least 48 hours. The swelling and ecchymosis that may appear are completely normal and will disappear after a few days. Gradually, patients can go back to their daily life and work. Exercise can be started again about 3-4 weeks after the operation.

The results of this procedure are very much appreciated by patients because, thanks to Prof. Dini’s extensive experience, the end result is always very natural and balanced.
