Lipofilling - Face and body volume augmentation
WHAT IS LIPOFILLING?
The lipofilling or ”lipostructure" procedure is an aesthetic and reconstructive surgical technique that contours the areas of the body which, due to the patient’s natural body type, previous traumas or following weight loss, stress and ageing, can appear emptied or not sufficiently filled out or proportioned. Through lipofilling, Prof. Dini can correct and reshape face and body volume, using the patient’s fat as filler, which is taken from areas in which there is an excess (abdomen, hips, thighs) and re-implanted into the areas that need greater volume (face, breasts, buttocks, calves).
WHO IS THIS PROCEDURE FOR?
This aesthetic surgery is prevalently requested by women between the ages of 20 and 60, who want to correct a lack of volume in areas that are considered especially important for the female appearance: face, breasts, buttocks and calves. Generally, younger patients want to increase the volume of their mouth, cheekbones and breasts; after 40, patients opt for fullness that makes their appear face younger and relaxed.
WHAT DOES THE PRE-OPERATIVE VISIT ENTAIL?
During the pre-operative visit, the professor will evaluate the patient's physical features and illustrate the results that can be achieved. Lipofilling, in fact, moderately increases volumes and can only be performed on small areas. Over the course of the visit, the professor will also check the patient's overall health and habits, like smoking or medications that could affect the final results of the procedure. Should pre-operative tests need to be performed like ultrasound and mammography in the event of breast lipofilling, the professor will prescribe the tests and the specialists to contact.
HOW IS THE LIPOFILLING PROCEDURE DONE?
The operation consists of taking fat from areas of the body where there is an excess (i.e.; abdomen, hips, thighs) and transferring it to those areas that appear empty (face, breasts, buttocks and calves) and need to be contoured and filled. Although lipofilling is a surgical technique, it leaves no scars since it does not require incisions because microcannulas are used. The procedure can take a variable amount of time, depending on the area treated. The type of anaesthesia used depends on how long the procedure lasts: it can be local with sedation (which means the patient is awake but feels no pain) or general. Depending on the extent of the procedure and the type of anaesthesia used, the patient’s stay will be in the day hospital or overnight.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT IN POST-OPERATIVE RECOVERY?
In the hours following the procedure, there may be light swelling and, in some cases, a slight achy feeling. Both the swelling and the aching will gradually decrease and, after just a few weeks, the patient can go back to leading a normal life. The optimal results of the operation will be seen in about six months.
