Chemical Peel - Skin exfoliation treatments

WHAT ARE CHEMICAL PEELS?

Chemical peels are an aesthetic medical treatment based on one or more exfoliating-chemical agents that smooth the skin on the face and improve its compactness, restoring a visibly younger, brighter appearance. Chemical peels are indicated in the treatment of wrinkles and skin spots on the face and hands, to improve acne scars, to tighten skin and combat the effects of ageing.

HOW MANY TYPES OF CHEMICAL PEELS ARE THERE?

Depending on the products used (glycolic acid, lactic acid, phenol, etc.), the peel will be superficial, intermediate or deep. After having examined the patient, Prof. Dini will decide the type of chemical peel that is best suited for the patient's skin type and what flaws can be corrected.

“Superficial” peels are used to remove the stratum corneum (which is the outermost layer of the skin), to eliminate the tiniest wrinkles and small spots, as well as to make the skin smoother and brighter. The treatment requires no anaesthesia and must be repeated after a few days for a total of 4-6 sessions. The treatment can be repeated every 6 months.

"Intermediate” peels act on both the stratum corneum and on the superficial dermis through an exfoliation process that is completed in a week. This treatment requires no anaesthesia and ensures long-lasting results.

A “deep” peel (Phenol) is recommended only in cases of severe cutaneous ageing and only after having made sure that the patient’s skin is suitable for this type of treatment. These chemical peels work at a deeper level, eliminating more profound wrinkles, scars, acne remnants and larger skin spots. The treatment is done under local anaesthesia with sedation, as an outpatient procedure or with an overnight stay at the clinic. Upon completion of the peel, a compression bandage is applied to contain the natural swelling as a result of the treatment. Post-operative recovery is long since the skin must peel off completely in order to reach the desired effect and this may take about 7-10 days. The results are long-lasting and can be compared to a "non-surgical facelift".

WHAT RESULTS ARE ACHIEVED?

Aesthetic results and their duration vary depending on skin quality, the flaws to be corrected and the type of peel performed. All chemical peels can rejuvenate the skin, lessen wrinkles and improved skin imperfections, to varying degrees. Prof. Dini recommends repeating the treatment over time to maintain skin that is bright, youthful and smooth.
