Breast Augmentation with expert Italian surgeon Prof. Mario Dini

What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation, known as Additive Mastoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to enhance the size and shape of the breasts using implants. Over 30 years ago, when I began my career as a surgeon, breast augmentation was the first step into the world of aesthetic surgery. Today, it remains one of the most requested procedures, as it helps many women overcome insecurities about small or asymmetrical breasts, improving their body harmony and restoring self-confidence. Breast augmentation is ideal for those who, after pregnancy or breastfeeding, wish to restore lost volume and rediscover femininity.

Additionally, breast implants can correct asymmetries and improve the overall appearance of the chest.

Breast Augmentation: my specialty

Breast reshaping can transform self-perception and boost self-esteem. One of the most important aspects of breast augmentation that I have observed over the years is its positive impact on psychological well-being. Many women report feeling more confident and comfortable in their bodies just a few days after surgery. This renewed confidence can positively influence various aspects of life, from personal relationships to career.
With thirty years of experience in breast augmentation, also known as Additive Mastoplasty I have perfected the most advanced and safest techniques. My approach is not only technical; my priority is to pursue an aesthetic and personal transformation that brings patients to feel more secure and satisfied with their bodies.

Achieving a natural result is my mission: every patient is unique, and the outcome should reflect that uniqueness, ensuring a natural and lasting appearance.

Why Choose Breast Augmentation?

The decision to undergo breast augmentation or Additive Mastoplasty may be motivated by various personal reasons. Here are the most common motivations that lead patients to my practice:

Increasing Breast Volume

This is the most common reason: many women choose breast augmentation to enhance naturally small breasts. This request comes from both young women and adults who take care of their bodies through sports and a healthy diet and wish to see themselves in their best shape. This surgery can significantly improve the appearance of the breasts, making them fuller and more proportionate.

Correcting Breast Asymmetry

Breast asymmetry is a condition where the breasts are of different sizes or shapes. This is more common than one might think and can worsen over time, causing discomfort. Breast augmentation can correct this asymmetry by using implants of different sizes or specific techniques to harmonize volume and shape, resulting in a more balanced appearance that enhances body harmony and boosts self-confidence.

Restoring Lost Volume (Pregnancy, Weight Loss)

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss can cause the breasts to lose volume, leaving them looking deflated and less firm. Breast augmentation can restore lost volume, giving the breasts a full and youthful appearance. This surgery helps to restore natural forms, improve body harmony, and allows women to feel confident and satisfied.

Improving Aesthetics After Cancer Surgery

In some cases, breast augmentation is performed to improve the appearance of the breasts after surgery, such as a mastectomy. This allows for the restoration of volume and shape, creating a natural and symmetrical appearance. This type of procedure not only improves aesthetics but also helps restore confidence and psychological well-being. In this specific case, it is possible to intervene with unilateral breast augmentation, reconstructing the affected breast with techniques that use expanders, breast implants, lipofilling, or pedicled or microsurgical flaps, while symmetrizing the healthy breast with breast augmentation.

Feminization for Transgender Individuals

For transgender individuals, breast augmentation can be an important step in the transition process, creating a breast appearance that reflects their gender identity.

Types of Breast implants for Augmentation

The choice of breast implants is crucial and strongly affects the final result of the breast augmentation procedure. It is the plastic surgeon’s responsibility to select an implant type suitable for the patient’s body structure and tissue characteristics to achieve the most natural breast possible.
There are currently several types of implants that differ in shape, surface, and content.

Implant Shape

Breast implants come in various shapes:

  • Round: Ideal for patients with a harmonious breast shape who desire a moderate volume increase. They are particularly suitable for women who, after one or more pregnancies, have a “deflated” upper pole and/or sagging breasts.
  • Anatomical (Teardrop): Designed for women with very little breast tissue or those who desire a very natural effect, these implants mimic the natural shape of the breast, with a thinner upper part and a fuller lower part.
  • Ergonomic: These implants offer the advantages of being both anatomical and round but can only be placed in patients who are not very thin and have sufficiently thick tissue in the breast region.

Implant Surface

The surface of implants can be:

  • Smooth: These have a slightly softer shell and are less palpable to the touch. However, they may carry a slightly higher risk of capsular contracture.
  • Textured: More rigid to the touch, these implants are preferred by many surgeons as they tend to reduce the risk of capsular contracture and help maintain the implant’s position. Currently, only nano- and micro-textured implants can be used.

Implant Materials

Breast implants used in augmentation surgery consist of an external silicone shell and generally a silicone gel filling:

  • Silicone Gel: A highly cohesive and uniform material that, while soft and mimicking breast tissue, acts as a solid substance, preventing the contents from migrating in the event of rupture.
  • Saline Solution: These implants are no longer commonly used today due to their limitations in terms of consistency and naturalness.

The highest quality breast implants are produced by leading companies such as Mentor, Motiva, and Polytech:

  • Mentor: An American company synonymous with reliability and durability.
  • Motiva: Innovative ergonomic implants, highly appreciated for their advanced technology.
  • Polytech: Polyurethane and silicone implants, produced by a German company known for their safety and longevity.

All new generation implants ensure maximum safety, durability, and comfort. The main manufacturers offer a lifetime warranty on their implants.

FAQ

Faq about Breast Augmentation

The breast augmentation procedure typically lasts between one to two hours and is performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation in a day-hospital setting. Overnight hospitalization is rarely necessary. Mild soreness usually subsides within a week, and sutures are internal and fully absorbable. It’s normal to feel some fatigue and swelling in the first few days post-surgery. After 4-5 days, patients can return to light work activities, and in about three weeks, they can resume all normal activities, including exercise.

Legally, Additive Mastoplasty is not allowed for individuals under 18 unless there is a medical condition present in younger patients. The procedure can be performed on women over 70 as well.

After surgery, some mild soreness in the breast area may occur, but this is effectively managed with pain relievers.

During pregnancy, augmented breasts through Additive Mastoplasty behave like natural breasts, enlarging and undergoing changes associated with pregnancy.

Many women with breast implants from Additive Mastoplasty can successfully breastfeed. Recent studies indicate that there are no elevated levels of silicone in the milk of women with implants compared to those without. However, implants may interfere with breastfeeding if the incision is made around the areola.

Augmented breasts can look very natural if the implants are suitable for the patient’s body shape and size, placed under the pectoral muscle, and free from complications such as capsular contracture.

If the implants are well-placed and there are no reactions like capsular contracture, breasts augmented through Additive Mastoplasty feel very natural and soft to the touch.

Nipple sensitivity may increase or decrease temporarily after Additive Mastoplasty; only in rare cases is the change permanent.

Wearing a supportive bra is recommended for about a month. After that, the patient is free to choose whether to wear one or not.

Yes, but not until two months after surgery, and the scar should not be exposed to sunlight for at least one year.

You should wait one month before resuming any sports activities, and avoid physical exertion and sun exposure until full healing is achieved.

Contact sports can be practiced with caution, but limitations depend on the type of procedure and implant size.

It is advisable to abstain from smoking before and after surgery, as smoking can increase the risk of complications and delay healing.

The surgery takes one to two hours. You can return home the next day, and any soreness typically resolves within a week. After 4-5 days, patients can resume light work, and all normal activities, including sports, can usually be resumed within three weeks.

The results of Additive Mastoplasty are long-lasting. However, the effects of gravity and aging can alter the appearance of the breasts over time, as they do with natural breasts.

There are no contraindications to traveling by plane or scuba diving with silicone gel implants.

No, the implants reach the same temperature as your body.

High-quality breast implants, such as those produced by Motiva or Mentor, are designed to last a lifetime and come with a lifetime warranty. However, it is advisable to consider replacement over time to prevent deformation or deflation. If there are no specific issues, implants can be maintained indefinitely.

Yes. Scientific studies have shown that silicone implants are not responsible for serious diseases. Silicone is widely used in many everyday products, both medical and non-medical.

Breast implants may make mammograms slightly more difficult if placed above the pectoral muscle. If placed under the muscle, there are no difficulties for the radiologist.

Only if large or excessively sized implants are used in a patient with low skin elasticity.
